Why use a resin cleansing ritual for cleansing and protection?

Introduction
This resin cleansing ritual is designed for deeper energetic clearing and protection, especially during times of transition, conflict, or major shifts within a space.
Cleansing a space can help release stagnant energy, reset the emotional atmosphere, and restore a sense of calm and safety. This guide explains how to use a resin cleansing and protection kit with charcoal to intentionally clear and protect your space.
There are many ways to cleanse — sound, smoke, energy work, herbs, incense, prayer, and more. This ritual focuses specifically on burning resin on charcoal, with the option to add herbs if desired. Please note: this is an intensely smoky process. If your space cannot support smoke, this method may not be the right fit for you.
I personally use lighter tools like sage or palo santo when things feel slightly off. I reach for charcoal and resin when something bigger has happened — intense conflict, emotional upheaval, unwanted energy, major life transitions, seasonal changes, or moving into a new home. There’s no wrong time to cleanse. Trust your intuition.
This ritual is about intention, not perfection.

Why use resin for cleansing and protection?
Cleansing clears away stagnant or unwanted energy, but it doesn’t automatically replace it with something supportive. Think of it like opening windows in a stuffy room — fresh air comes in, but only if you guide the process. Using specific resins allows you to both clear a space and intentionally set the tone for what comes next.
This makes resin work especially useful for deeper resets, major transitions, or times when you want your space to feel protected as well as clear.
Copal resin for cleansing
Copal has long been used for spiritual purification and energetic renewal. It is often chosen for its ability to:
Clear heavy or stagnant energy
Support emotional calm and balance
Create a refreshed, uplifted atmosphere
Common types of copal include white, dark/black, and golden varieties. While each has subtle differences, all are effective for cleansing purposes.
Frankincense and myrrh for protection
Frankincense and myrrh have been used across cultures for spiritual clarity, grounding, and protection. While there are many varieties of each resin, their core energetic purpose remains consistent — sealing, stabilizing, and protecting a space after cleansing.
What’s included in the resin cleansing kit
Copal resin
Frankincense and myrrh resin
One charcoal disc
Matches
This kit is typically enough to cleanse and protect a space of approximately 1,000 square feet. Smaller spaces may allow for multiple uses, while larger spaces may require additional kits.
What you’ll need
A heat-safe dish or burner (ceramic, metal, or stone)
Sand or salt (recommended for charcoal safety)
Optional: candle, journal, crystals, or calming music
🔥 Charcoal and resin safety
Burning resin on charcoal produces a significant amount of smoke and heat.
Use only heat-safe surfaces
Place charcoal on sand or salt for insulation
Allow charcoal to spark and ash over before adding resin (30–60 seconds)
Add small amounts of resin — do not overload the charcoal
Never leave burning charcoal unattended
Keep away from pets, children, and flammable materials
Ventilate your space as needed
Allow charcoal to cool fully before disposal
Move slowly and prioritize safety throughout the ritual.
How to cleanse and protect your space (step-by-step)
1. Set your intention
Choose a phrase or focus, such as: “Anything that no longer serves me is being released from this space.”
2. Open a window or door
This allows cleared energy to exit the space.
3. Begin cleansing with copal
Light your charcoal, allow it to ash over, and add copal resin.
For cleansing, I move top to bottom, back to front. Other traditions move counterclockwise to remove energy. Do what feels right to you — this is your practice.
Move intentionally through your space, making sure to reach corners, doorways, under furniture, between shelving, and high-traffic areas. In places where you sit most often — your favorite chair, your work desk — you may want to rest the dish on the floor for a few extra seconds to allow the copal to fully cleanse the area. Please take care not to damage flooring.
4. Complete the cleansing
Take your time. This process may take 20–30 minutes, depending on the size of your space. Stay focused on your intention and visualize the energy that no longer serves you moving out of the space.
5. Seal with frankincense and myrrh
Close any windows or doors. Add frankincense and myrrh to the charcoal. If copal is still burning, that’s completely fine — you can place the frankincense and myrrh alongside it.
For protection and sealing, I move bottom to top, front to back. Other traditions move clockwise. Again, do what feels right for you.
This part of the process tends to be more general and less rigid, though I still pause longer in high-traffic areas. As always, take care not to burn flooring or surfaces.
6. Close the ritual
When you feel complete, thank your space, the materials, and yourself.
Closing
Cleansing is a practice, not a one-time event. Calm, low-traffic spaces may only need this ritual a few times a year, while busy or energetically intense environments may benefit from monthly cleansing.
Thank you for trusting Lady Layre to support your ritual practice and your space. 🖤
