🌙✨Check out this post about incense from the one and only Taylor from In the Glen Goods!
Smell is one of the most powerful senses for bringing you back to a specific time in your memory, getting you in a particular frame of mind, or helping you focus your intentions and thoughts. Incense is a key part of that and a tool that humans have been using since antiquity. It is a versatile tool that can be used in your everyday practice or to uplift your space.
When I first got it in my head that I wanted to try making incense, I knew I wanted to make something that could serve as part of people’s spells and practices, as well as a nice smell to waft through people’s homes. A significant part of that was also the decision only to use essential oils, not fragrance oils. Most incense that is commercially made today is made with fragrance oils, which can cause itching in your nose or throat if you are sensitive to irritants. With essential oils, you don’t get that itchiness, and there is a closer connection to the plants the oils are derived from.
Setting intentions with specific blends is also a facet of my incense that I enjoy spending time discovering, tinkering, and following intuition. Starting with a blended incense is a great way to bring incense into your practice. When I make blends, I start with a goal for what the blend should be achieving (cleansing, protecting, uplifting, celebrating) and then research oils, plants, and smells associated with those goals. From there, I follow what feels right, ask my friends to sniff test it so I know it smells good to other people, and then it is added to the collection after final tweaks.
When choosing which incense will work best for you, it's important to follow your gut. The names of the blended incense can help center your intentions and your focus, while the scents blended boost your workings. As you get more comfortable with the associations with individual elements, single-scent incense is also a good way to narrow in on your goals. It is also good practice to make sure you like the smell of whatever you have picked, since that is the most important part of any aromatic.
I love to use my incense in my practice to help me set intentions, cleanse a space or items, or just to help calm my nerves with familiar scents that comfort me. My favorite practice is to light incense when I need to complete a task that I have been avoiding. This helps me to not only be present in the space, but it can also work as a timer since my incense burns for about an hour. It’s all about figuring out what works for you, your habits, and your practices.
The biggest thing I use my incense for is cleansing. I use it to cleanse stones, tarot cards, items for my altar, etc. Since there are some stones that are sensitive to the sun or water, smoke cleansing is a safe and sure way to cleanse items that you use frequently in your practice. It can also be nice to bathe items in smoke with specific intentions in mind for that object. For example, using Patchoil incense on a new wallet to help money come to your pocket.
Burning incense is a versatile tool for any metaphysical practice and one of my favorite things. If you ever have a specific working or blend in mind, feel free to direct message me at @intheglengoods on Instagram. I am always open to custom blends and personal requests. Happy Burning!
