Cleansing (or clearing) a Space

Let’s Talk About Cleansing ✨

What does it even mean?!

Do I need a bunch of tools?

When should I do it?

Where?

Why?

And who is it even for?

Spoiler: Everyone can cleanse—and it doesn’t have to be fancy.

For me, having a "clean" energetic space is essential—whether I'm doing a formal ritual or just clearing the air after an uncomfortable interaction. Cleansing (or clearing) is what we do when something feels off—like a heaviness or “ick” in the room, or even in our own body.

When to Cleanse

Think of cleansing as energetic hygiene. Here are a few moments when I know it's time:

  • After a heavy or emotional tarot reading

  • When a customer or client leaves behind chaotic energy

  • After a tense conversation or emotionally charged interaction

  • Before or after moving into a new space (home, hotel, AirB&B, new job)

  • When a room or object feels… not right

If you feel unsettled, uncomfortable, or notice a weird energetic shift—that’s your cue. Trust it.

It’s All About Intention

The most important tool in any type of magick or cleansing is your intention. You can have all the fancy supplies in the world, but if your focus is scattered, it won’t work the way you want it to.

You have to know it’s going to work. That certainty becomes your power.Set your intention to clear what no longer serves you—whether it’s through a repeated affirmation, prayer, or simple sentence.

And if you don’t feel clear yet? That’s totally OK. Just do it again. Energy is layered, and sometimes it takes more than one sweep.

Free & Easy Ways to Cleanse

You don’t need anything fancy to cleanse. Here are some accessible methods:

🌬️ Sound & Movement

If I can't burn anything, I’ll walk around clapping my hands or move my arms through the space to “break up” stuck energy. I open a door or window to give that energy somewhere to go. Sometimes I’ll blow it out with my breath or use my hands to brush it off like I’m dusting off dirt.

🎨 Color Visualization

Color is a powerful cleansing tool. Some people imagine rust-colored energy pulling “yuckies” from their body and sinking into the earth. Others prefer green, white, or gold—use whatever feels good to you.

Once you’ve cleared the space or your body, fill it back up with something beautiful:

Tools to Support Your Practice

While intention is #1, here are some supportive tools you can incorporate:

🔮 Invokations Aura Cleanse Spray

A quick spritz with clear intention can remove lingering energies. Available in the shop—just spray around your body while focusing on clearing.

🌙 Selenite

Use a selenite wand or stick to “comb” energy off your body, or place a disk beneath your divination tools to clear them.

Reminder: Selenite is water-sensitive—don’t get it wet!

🌼 Florida Water

My personal blend (available in the shop) is great for cleansing. You can:

  • Spray it around your space

  • Rub some between your palms

  • Dab it on parts of your body that feel heavy or blocked

🍃 DIY Herbal Wash

Boil herbs like sage, bay leaf, rosemary—or whatever calls to you—and let the steam infuse the water. Use it in mop water or cleaning sprays.

Pro tip: It’s natural, so use it within a week or freeze it into cubes to drop into hot water when needed.

Let’s Talk Smoke Cleansing 🔥

🪴 Sage

If you don't have a smudge stick, no worries! You can grab sage leaves at the grocery store. Light it responsibly, blow out the flame, and waft the smoke through the area you’re cleansing.

💨 Charcoal & Resin (My Favorite!)

This is my personal go-to because of the thick, curling smoke. I use copal resin on a charcoal disk in a fire-safe container.

Here’s how:

  • Light the charcoal until it sparks fully

  • Place resin on top

  • Walk the container through your space

  • ⚠️ It gets hot, so handle with care!

  • There is a bit more direction in my Protection Blog Post!

Final Thoughts

There’s no one “right” time to cleanse—only the time you feel it’s needed. Practice noticing how you feel after certain interactions or in certain places. That icky feeling? That’s your body telling you it’s time to clear.

Trust yourself. You already know when it’s needed. You already have what you need.

And when in doubt—cleanse it out.
